Every town, village, and hamlet in NW Argentina has a football field, some even sport a basket court. This is true even where the number of inhabitants is insufficient to form two teams and play a game. Even when in fact there are no inhabitants. Even well above 4000 m above sea level. These facilities thus lose their intended function, and become an interface between the human settlement and the surrounding natural environment. Goal posts frame the landscape of the Puna. Basketball backboards only face the wind.
